September 2025 CPT Editorial Panel Meeting Agenda Analysis

September 2025 CPT Editorial Panel meeting: what’s on the agenda and why it matters

The American Medical Association (AMA) CPT®* Editorial Panel will convene in Chicago, Illinois, from September 18 to 20, 2025. The meeting agenda includes proposals to create new current procedural terminology (CPT) codes and to revise or delete existing codes. The AMA publishes a full agenda and a separate pathology/laboratory agenda, which includes code requests related to molecular pathology, multi-analyte assays with algorithmic analyses (MAAA), and genomic sequencing procedures. Meeting attendees typically include physicians, representatives from national medical specialty societies, industry stakeholders, and public and private payors. Outcomes from the meeting will be made public on October 3, 2025.

What is the CPT Editorial Panel?

The CPT Editorial Panel is responsible for maintaining the CPT code set, which was developed in 1966 to describe medical, surgical, and diagnostic services performed by physicians and other qualified healthcare professionals. The panel meets three times each year (typically in February, May, and September) to review requests for changes to the CPT code set, such as adding or deleting a code or modifying existing nomenclature.

What’s on the September agenda?

September 2-25 CPT Editorial Panel meeting agendaThe September meeting is the final opportunity to submit code proposals for inclusion in the 2027 CPT code set and associated Medicare payment schedules. In general, changes approved at the September 2025 meeting will be reflected in the 2027 CPT code book and considered during the 2027 Medicare rulemaking cycle for payment systems such as the Physician Fee Schedule, Hospital Outpatient Prospective Payment System, and Ambulatory Surgical Center Payment System. As the last meeting in the cycle, the September agenda is typically full, and this year is no exception.

The agenda for the September 2025 CPT Editorial Panel meeting, posted on July 11, 2025, initially included 92 individual code requests (referred to as “tabs”). Inclusion on the agenda does not guarantee that a request will be heard; applicants may withdraw their requests at any time prior to panel discussion. Seven agenda items for the September meeting have been terminated or withdrawn already.

Highlights from the September 2025 agenda

  • Proposed framework for clinically meaningful algorithmic analyses. The panel will hold a preliminary discussion (tab 94) on a proposed new category of CPT codes for algorithmic services that analyze clinical data – such as imaging data, lab results, or biophysical signals – to generate meaningful outputs that inform patient care. These services would not involve traditional physician or qualified healthcare professional work. The framework, tentatively titled clinically meaningful algorithmic analyses, is still in development by the panel’s Digital Medicine Coding Committee, which is actively seeking stakeholder feedback and held stakeholder listening sessions in May and June 2025.
  • AI-related code requests across categories. Thirteen agenda items reference artificial intelligence (AI) as defined under CPT taxonomy S, reflecting AI’s growing role in clinical care. These include:
    • Two Category I code applications for augmentative diagnostic radiology services.
    • A request to convert and expand coding for AI-based coronary fractional flow reserve.
    • Ten Category III code proposals for AI-enabled services, including one for an autonomous genetic counseling service.
  • Ongoing maternity care code modernization. Following a 2024 code change application, the Maternity Care Services Workgroup was formed to evaluate and update CPT codes reflecting modern maternity care practices from antepartum through postpartum. The September 2025 agenda includes proposed new and revised codes (tab 30) to better capture current clinical workflows and support accurate, comprehensive reporting of maternity services.
