March 24, 2020
On March 23, 2020, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) extended the deadline for clinicians to submit data for the 2019 performance year of the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS). The deadline has been extended from March 31 to April 30, 2020. CMS stated that all clinicians who are unable to submit data by April 30, 2020, will automatically have the extreme and uncontrollable circumstances policy applied. These clinicians will receive a neutral payment adjustment in 2021. CMS is also extending the data submission deadline and making policy exceptions for other quality reporting programs like the Medicare Shared Savings Program and the Hospital Inpatient Quality Reporting Program. More details are available here.
The agency has also indicated it is evaluating potential options to provide relief around participation and data submission for the MIPS 2020 performance year as well.
This action is amongst many the agency is taking amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. More information and timely update about the Quality Payment Program (QPP) can be found on the QPP website.
