On July 17, 2018, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services Administrator Seem Verma, released a letter to physicians explaining how the agency is committed to reducing the documentation burden on providers. This letter highlighted a proposal in the 2019 Medicare Physician Fee Schedule proposed rule to overhaul documentation, billing and payment for evaluation and management (E/M) services as well as changes to electronic health records. The proposal to overhaul E/M services was previously reported by McDermottPlus and further details can be found here.
CMS has described these proposals as ways of improving the lives of clinicians by reducing their reporting burden, but proposed reimbursement cuts to E/M services, which are also a component of these proposals, are viewed with concern by some clinicians and other stakeholders.
The CMS letter is available here.
