Certified electronic health record technology (CEHRT) is required for participation in the Advancing Care Information (ACI) Performance Category of the Quality Payment Program (QPP). MIPS eligible clinicians and groups who do not have access to CEHRT may qualify for an exception to the ACI requirements. CMS would reweight their ACI performance category score to 0% of the final score, and can submit a Hardship Exception Application, for one of the following specified reasons: insufficient internet connectivity, extreme and uncontrollable circumstances, and lack of control over the availability of CEHRT. Applications will be processed on a rolling basis.
Additionally, there are some MIPS eligible clinicians who are considered Special Status, who will be automatically reweighted and do not need to submit a Quality Payment Program Hardship Exception Application.
