Top 5 Takeaways: CMS Proposes to Extend and Expand CJR

On February 20, 2020, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a proposed rule that would make modifications to the Comprehensive Care for Joint Replacement (CJR) Model. CJR, the first mandatory model established by CMS, is an inpatient episode-based payment model focused on hip and knee joint replacements. CMS proposes to extend this mandatory model by three years, expand the scope of the model to the outpatient setting, and revise the target price calculation. CMS is also soliciting comments on designing a bundled payment model for lower extremity joint replacement (LEJR) procedures performed in the ambulatory surgical center (ASC) setting.

Comments on the proposed rule are due on April 24, 2020.

Key proposals and requests from the proposed rule are available here.
