Specialty Societies Ask Congress to Act to Avert Application of MIPS Adjustment on Part B Drugs

In the 2018 Quality Payment Program Final Rule, CMS clarified that the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) payment adjustment will be applied to payments for both items and services under Medicare Part B, including Part B drugs. This is a departure from the legacy physician quality program, PQRS, which only applied to services. This policy has garnered significant concern among provider groups and other stakeholders.

On November 28, 2017, eleven physician specialty societies sent a letter to Senate Finance and the House Ways and Means Committee, requesting them to intervene so the adjustment is not applied to Part B drugs. The letter also indicated an interest by the societies to discuss with Congress in the near future concerns they had with cost measures in the MIPS program.

The letter is available here.
