ONC and CMS to Host Webinars on the Recently Released Interoperability and Information Blocking Final Rules

On Monday, March 9, the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC) released its long awaited final rule adopting exceptions to the Cures Act’s information blocking prohibition and updates to the ONC’s health IT certification program. At the same time, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) released a final rule on the related topic of interoperability.

Together, these rules attempt to make it easier for patients to have access to and control over their health data. The ONC final rule generally provides the rules of the road, or “standards” for the technology and how it is used. CMS is using these standards in its final rule to also increase access to patient claims data, not just health information contained in an electronic health record or as part of an electronic health network. These final rules represent significant changes for how health care providers, health IT developers, and health plans.
