OIG Survey Finds Hospitals Experiencing Shortages of Testing Supplies and PPE

On April 6, 2020, the Office of the Inspector of General (OIG), Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released findings from a survey of hospitals from March 23-27, 2020 to assess the challenges facing hospitals.

  • Hospitals reported that their most significant challenges centered on testing and caring for patients with COVID-19 and keeping staff safe.
  • Hospitals described substantial challenges maintaining and expanding capacity to care for patients.
  • Hospitals reported using a range of strategies to maintain or expand their capacity to care for patients and to keep staff safe.

The report included suggestions to the government from hospitals including assistance with testing, supplies, and equipment (e.g., PPE); assistance with workforce allocation and facility capacity; financial assistance; and communication and public information.
