MedPAC Publishes March 2020 Report to Congress

The Medicare Payment Advisory Commission (MedPAC) published the March 2020 Report to Congress on Friday, March 13, 2020. As required by law, the Commission made recommendations for nine provider sectors in fee-for-service Medicare and reviewed the status of Medicare Advantage and the Medicare Part D program.

The Commission recommended updating the fiscal year 2021 inpatient payment rates by 2%. For physicians and other healthcare professionals, MedPAC recommended updating 2021 payment rates by the amount determined under current law (which currently is 0%). MedPAC also recommended ambulatory surgical centers report cost data, a recommendation they have made in previous years.

The March Report to Congress also provides status updates on the Medicare Advantage program and Medicare Part D. Both programs have grown in the past several years in enrollment and cost.

MedPAC is an independent congressional agency established by the Balanced Budget Act of 1997 (P.L. 105-33) to advise the US Congress on issues affecting the Medicare program.
