Hospital Promoting Interoperability Hardship Exemption Application Due September 1

Eligible hospitals must submit hardship exemptions for the Medicare Promoting Interoperability Program by September 1, 2020. Eligible critical access hospitals (CAHs) have until November 30, 2020, to submit a hardship exemption. This deadline has been extended from the original date of July 1, 2020, due to COVID-19.

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services requires hospitals and CAHs to demonstrate appropriate use of certified electronic health record technology to meet the requirements of the Promoting Interoperability Program. Hospitals that can demonstrate that this compliance requirement would create a significant burden can apply to an exemption for one payment adjustment year. When applying, it is required that hospitals provide proof of hardship. The hardship application is available online.

Additional information is available on the CMS Promoting Interoperability Programs website.
