HHS Focuses on Patient Access to their Data in 2020-2025 Federal Health IT Strategic Plan

On October 30, 2020, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) released the final 2020-2025 Federal Health IT Strategic Plan. It outlines federal health IT goals and objectives, with a focus on individuals’ access to their electronic health information. The plan builds on the 21st Century Cures Act to accelerate a coordinated focus on improving access to and exchange of electronic health information.

The strategic plan has four overarching goals for the agency over the next several years:

  1. Promote Health and Wellness
  2. Enhance the Delivery and Experience of Care
  3. Build a Secure, Data-Driven, Ecosystem to Accelerate Research and Innovation
  4. Connect Healthcare with Health Data

The plan was developed in collaboration with more than 25 federal organizations and is informed by nearly 100 public comments. Additional information can be found on the Office of the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology website.
