COVID-19 Activities and Actions Update

May 06, 2020

As part of the ongoing White House Coronavirus Task Force efforts, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) and other agencies have issued several resource documents, refocused activities related to state survey agencies and accrediting organizations, and taken other related actions. Key updates from this past week include:

On April 30, CMS released a second wave of flexibilities for providers during the COVID-19 pandemic. This IFC and additional waivers provide greater coverage for testing, increase telehealth flexibilities and postpone additional QPP reporting and program requirements.

CMS released FAQs clarifying requirements and considerations for hospitals and other providers related to EMTALA during the COVID-19 pandemic.

CMS released this guidance document to help providers identify the laboratory tests, codes, and code categories for diagnostic tests that do not require a practitioner order.

CMS announced an independent commission to provide oversight of nursing homes. This commission will help inform efforts to safeguard the health and quality of beneficiaries residing in nursing homes.

CMS updated the QPP COVID-19 response summary document to reflect the additional changes made by the agency.

An inventory of these documents and more is available here: McDermottPlus COVID Guidance Tracker

CMS is documenting its COVID-19 activities on their Current Emergencies website.
