CMS Updates Hospital Quality Info and Proposes Changes to Hospital Star Ratings

March 05, 2019

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) updated hospital performance data on the Hospital Compare website and on The update included specific measures of hospitals’ quality of care, many of which are updated quarterly, and the Overall Hospital Star Ratings, which were last updated in December 2017. A press release on the update is available here.

CMS also posted potential changes to the Hospital Star Ratings which are open for public comment through March 29, 2019. CMS is proposing a number of changes including the establishment of peer grouping. Under peer grouping, hospitals with similar characteristics would be placed into “peer groups” allowing, for example, small hospitals to be compared to other small hospitals instead of all hospitals. CMS has indicated that many of the proposed changes have been developed through feedback from stakeholders.

CMS is hosting a conference call on Wednesday, March 6, 2019, at 1pm ET, to discuss these proposed changes. The participant dial-in number is 1-800-837-1935 and the conference ID is 3934159.
