The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is now accepting applications for the Medicare Advantage Qualifying Incentive Arrangement (MAQI) demonstration project under the Medicare Access and CHIP Reauthorization Act (MACRA) Quality Payment Program (QPP). The MAQI demonstration will allow certain eligible clinicians to be exempt from the Merit-based Incentive Payment System (MIPS) if they participate sufficiently in risk arrangements with Medicare Advantage (MA) plans. According to CMS, the demonstration is intended to test whether exempting these clinicians from MIPS will increase or maintain participation in payment arrangements similar to Advanced Alternative Payment Models (APMs) with MA plans.
As we described in our QPP webinar, MAQI participants will qualify for a MIPS exemption but will not qualify for the five percent Advanced APM bonus.
Additional information about the MAQI demonstration is available on the dedicated Center for Medicare and Medicaid Innovation website.
For more information on the QPP visit the McDermottPlus MACRA Resource Center or contact Sheila Madhani at 202-204-1459, firstname.lastname@example.org or Mara McDermott at 202-204-1462, email@example.com.
