CMS MA VBID Update: 2020 Participants Announced and 2021 Hospice Benefit RFA Now Available

The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) announced the 14 Medicare Advantage (MA) organizations participating in the MA Value-based Insurance Design (VBID) model for plan year 2020.

Additionally, CMS released a Request for Applications (RFA) for MA plans interested in participating in the hospice benefit component of the MA VBID model in CY 2021. The RFA can be found here and applications are due March 16, 2020.

Launched in 2017, the MA VBID model tests how the MA program can be modified to improve care coordination and quality while reducing program expenditures. This model allows plans to alter benefit designs based on certain chronic diseases or socioeconomic characteristics to better provide care for patients with high needs and ultimately lower costs. Last year, CMS announced a Part D component – Part D Payment Modernization Model effective in 2020. At the start of the 2021 plan year, the VBID model will test allowing MA plans to offer Medicare’s hospice benefit. Additional information about the model can be found on the MA VBID model webpage.
