On Friday, June 5, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Innovation Center announced a series of updates to the Next Generation ACO model timeline and financial methodology. The model was initially set to conclude at the end of this year, but the Innovation Center will be extending it through December 2021. The agency is also making a number of changes in response to the COVID-19 outbreak, including removing episodes of care for the treatment of COVID-19 patients from financial benchmarks and canceling the 2019 quality audit. Participating ACOs will have the option to have their shared losses and savings capped at 5%. A Next-Gen ACO Coalition press release applauding the model extension can be found here.
