The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently announced that they are extending key deadlines for the Bundled Payment Care Improvement (BPCI) Advanced model. CMS extended the deadline for providers to submit signed participation agreements and select clinical episodes for BPCI Advanced from August 1 to August 8. CMS also extended the deadline for providers to submit deliverables to CMS under BPCI Advanced to September 14. The model is still scheduled to go live on October 1, 2018. An updated timeline is available here.
CMS was scheduled to provide BPCI Advanced applicants episode price targets and other data in May. This data would help participants make informed decisions on participating in the program. There was a delay in CMS releasing this data and stakeholders had urged CMS to delay the deadline to submit signed participation agreements or make other adjustments to the model timeline.
The BPCI Advanced will operate under a retrospective model where the usual fee-for-service (FFS) payments are made, and the total FFS payment for the clinical episode is then retrospectively reconciled against a predetermined target price. BPCI Advanced will qualify as an Advanced Alternative Payment Model (Advanced APM) under the Quality Payment Program. More information on the model is available here.
