March 24, 2020
This announcement from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) brings the total number of approved Section 1135 waivers for states to 13. On March 13, 2020, President Trump declared the COVID-19 situation a national emergency which enables the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) to waive certain requirements in Medicare, Medicaid, and CHIP under Section 1135 authority. The waiver allows states to modify Medicaid regulations and policies to facilitate the provision of services as each state responds to the coronavirus crisis.
CMS approved waivers for the following states: Alabama, Arizona, California, Illinois, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, and Virginia. Previously, CMS approved waivers for Florida and Washington State.
