Bipartisan Congressional Letter Urging Recognition of Medicare Advantage as Advanced APMs

July 14, 2017

A bipartisan Congressional letter was sent to Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price and Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services Administrator Seema Verma urging recognition of certain Medicare Advantage contracts for purposes of qualifying as an Advanced Alternative Payment Model (APM) under the Advanced APM pathway of the Quality Payment Program (QPP).

With limited Advanced APM options in the 2017 Quality Payment Program, stakeholders have been urging CMS to give physicians credit for participation in Medicare Advantage APMs. While currently only Medicare-based APMs are eligible for the Advanced APM pathway under the QPP, the MACRA statute requires CMS to implement an All-Payer Combination Advanced APM option by 2021. Medicare Advantage APMs could potentially qualify under this option.

The letter is available here.
